The Pacuare River journey takes you through one of the world's most biologically diverse regions, with primary rainforest lining much of the route. From your raft, you may spot howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, sloths, river otters, and thousands of bird species including toucans, parrots, oropendolas, and sunbitterns. The river corridor hosts incredible botanical diversity featuring massive buttressed trees, delicate orchids, colorful bromeliads, and towering bamboo stands. Between rapids, watch for spectacular waterfalls cascading hundreds of feet down canyon walls directly into the river, creating ethereal mist and rainbows on sunny days. The Pacuare's deep gorges and canyons reveal dramatic geological formations including exposed volcanic rock layers, natural stone arches, and perfectly clear side-streams joining the main river. Indigenous Cabécar people occasionally maintain small settlements in this remote region, though these are rarely visible from the river. During calmer sections and optional side hikes, your guide may point out jaguar tracks, poison dart frogs, and other elusive wildlife signs that highlight the primeval nature of this protected watershed.
Itinerary
Your Pacuare expedition begins with early morning pickup (5:30-6:30am) from San José or Turrialba accommodations, followed by a scenic drive to our operations center for a hearty Costa Rican breakfast. After comprehensive safety instruction and equipment fitting, you'll travel to the river put-in point where guides provide detailed paddling commands and techniques. The journey begins with friendlier Class II-III rapids allowing you to practice skills before tackling the more challenging sections. Over approximately 28km and 7-8 hours on the river, you'll navigate over 25 significant rapids including the famous "Upper and Lower Huacas," "Cimarrones," and "Double Drop," with intermittent calm sections for swimming and photography. A midday riverside lunch features fresh ingredients prepared by your guides at a scenic spot, often near a side waterfall with natural pools for swimming. Throughout the day, optional short hikes access hidden waterfalls and canyon views. Wildlife spotting and interpretation of the pristine rainforest environment complement the whitewater excitement before concluding at our downstream take-out point. After changing into dry clothes, enjoy celebratory refreshments before transportation returns you to your original departure point, typically arriving between 5:30-6:30pm.
