About Naranjo River Rush

Experience the perfect combination of accessibility and excitement on the Naranjo River, where Class III-IV rapids flow from mountain highlands through transitional forests before opening to Pacific lowlands. This half-day adventure packs impressive whitewater action into a shorter timeframe, making it ideal for travelers based near Manuel Antonio seeking a morning adrenaline rush followed by afternoon beach time. The river's unique character changes dramatically between seasons - offering technical boulder gardens during dry months and powerful wave trains during the rainy season. Navigate through rapids with names like "El Chorro," "The Terminator," and "Robin Hood" as you descend through a changing landscape with abundant bird life and occasional monkey sightings. This challenging but accessible adventure provides genuine excitement without requiring the full-day commitment of our more remote expeditions.

What You'll See @ Naranjo River Rush

The Naranjo River corridor showcases Costa Rica's diverse landscapes as you descend from interior mountains toward the Pacific coast. The upper sections feature forested canyons with occasional small waterfalls joining the main river, while lower sections open to wider valleys with views of distant coastal mountains. Wildlife commonly spotted includes numerous bird species such as toucans, kingfishers, and hawks, as well as basilisk lizards and iguanas on exposed rocks. Lucky groups might spot white-faced monkeys or sloths in riverside trees, particularly in less-trafficked morning departures. The surrounding vegetation transitions from highland species to more coastal flora as you descend, with distinctive differences between dry and rainy seasons - verdant and flowering during green months, more muted but still beautiful during drier periods. Near the lower sections, watch for distinctive palm species and larger river volume as tributaries join the main channel. Throughout the journey, the changing riverbed creates diverse features from technical boulder gardens to wider wave trains depending on water levels and section.

Itinerary

Your Naranjo adventure begins with morning pickup from your Manuel Antonio accommodation, followed by a short drive to our operations center for safety briefing and equipment fitting. After transportation to the river put-in, guides provide paddling instruction before launching into immediate action with Class III rapids that set the tone for this fast-paced half-day adventure. The journey covers approximately 11km of river featuring exciting rapids like "El Chorro," "The Terminator," and "Robin Hood" with minimal flat water between challenges. A brief riverside break provides refreshments and rest before tackling the second half of the expedition, which typically features the river's most technical sections. Throughout the journey, guides offer paddling commands and share brief information about the surrounding environment when conditions permit. The adventure concludes at our downstream take-out point near the coastal plain, where changing facilities and cold refreshments await. Transportation returns you to your accommodation by early afternoon, typically around 1:00pm, leaving the remainder of your day free for other activities.
