About Tenorio River Thrill
Conquer the mighty Tenorio River on this action-packed adventure featuring intense Class III-IV rapids and a heart-stopping 12-foot Class V waterfall drop. This full-day expedition through Guanacaste's rugged terrain delivers consistent whitewater action with minimal flat sections, making it perfect for thrill-seekers and physically fit adventurers seeking maximum excitement. Navigate through the "Monkey Drop," "The Terminator," and "Cascabel Falls" as you descend through a scenic canyon with towering walls and lush tropical vegetation. Unlike some rivers that vary significantly by season, the Tenorio maintains reliable flow from its spring-fed source, though the rainy season (May-November) offers the most challenging conditions. This physically demanding adventure requires good swimming ability and comfort in turbulent water, rewarding participants with an unparalleled adrenaline experience in a spectacular natural setting.

What You'll See @ Tenorio River Thrill
The Tenorio River flows through a dramatic landscape where dry tropical forest transitions to lusher ecosystems, creating diverse scenery throughout your journey. The river's canyon features impressive rock formations, including basalt columns and volcanic outcroppings that reveal the region's geological history. Wildlife sightings typically include iguanas, basilisk lizards, various hawk species, and occasionally troops of howler monkeys in the trees above the canyon. During calmer sections, look for freshwater fish including machaca and guapote visible in the clear waters. Unlike our more densely forested rivers, the Tenorio's more open canyon offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and occasionally the distant Miravalles Volcano. The riverbank vegetation includes unique species adapted to seasonal flooding, including flowering trees that attract numerous butterfly species. The famous 12-foot waterfall drop (Cascabel Falls) creates not only an adrenaline rush but also a spectacular visual highlight as water cascades through a narrow channel before dropping dramatically into a churning pool below.
Itinerary
Your Tenorio adventure begins with morning pickup from your Guanacaste accommodation, followed by a scenic drive to our operations center for safety instruction and equipment fitting. After a light breakfast, you'll transfer to the river put-in point where guides provide detailed paddling commands and techniques essential for the challenging rapids ahead. The journey covers approximately 16km of nearly continuous whitewater, beginning with Class III rapids that build your team's coordination before encountering the river's signature features including the "Monkey Drop," "The Terminator," and the infamous 12-foot "Cascabel Falls" waterfall. Unlike rivers with numerous calm sections, the Tenorio delivers consistent action with brief breaks to catch your breath, take photos, and receive guidance for upcoming challenges. A riverside lunch provides necessary refueling midway through the adventure. The expedition concludes at our take-out point where changing facilities and cold beverages await, along with an opportunity to view professional photos captured throughout your journey. Transportation returns you to your accommodation by late afternoon, typically between 4-5pm.

Volunteering at the Pacuare Reserve for sea turtle conservation changed my perspective on eco-tourism. Two weeks of meaningful work alongside dedicated conservationists was both humbling and inspiring. Explore Costa Rica handled all the logistics flawlessly.
